We get asked this question every single week at Skirmish Wycombe Airsoft. Someone's ready to upgrade or buy their first proper RIF, they've done some research, and now they want a straight answer: AEG, HPA, or GBB?
We're going to give you one. We're an HPA specialist shop, so you might expect us to push HPA regardless — but that's not actually helpful. The honest answer is that it depends on what you're doing, what you're spending, and what matters to you on the field. Here's how we break it down.
AEG — Automatic Electric Gun
An AEG runs on a rechargeable battery. You charge it at home, plug it into the gun, and it fires via an electric motor cycling a gearbox. It's been the dominant airsoft system for decades for good reason — it works, it's reliable, it's easy to maintain, and you don't need to think about it.
Who AEG is right for:
- Newer players who want something that works out of the box without research overhead
- Players on a tighter budget — a solid AEG like the G&G CM16 can be had for under £150
- Players who prefer not to carry external tanks or manage PSI settings
- Casual players who game a few times a year — AEGs are simple to pick up and put down
Where AEG falls short:
- Shot-to-shot FPS consistency is limited by the mechanical nature of the gearbox — you'll see FPS variance that HPA eliminates entirely
- Trigger response in semi-auto is slower than HPA because the gearbox has to cycle
- You can spend a lot of money upgrading an AEG (new gears, MOSFET, motor, hop unit) and still not match what a mid-range HPA platform delivers stock

HPA — High Pressure Air
HPA replaces the gearbox with a pneumatic engine powered by compressed air from an external tank. The tank connects to a regulator, which connects to an airline running to the engine in the rifle. You set a PSI on the regulator and every single shot fires at exactly that pressure — no variance, no degradation, no weather dependency.
We're obviously not neutral on this. HPA is what we do. But here's why we think it's the system most serious players eventually end up on:
The real advantages of HPA:
- Consistency. Shot-to-shot FPS variance on a properly tuned HPA system is effectively zero. Every BB leaves the barrel with the same energy. For accuracy at range, nothing touches it.
- Adjustability. You can dial your PSI on the regulator to hit exactly your site's joule limit with your chosen BB weight. No spring swaps, no guesswork at chrono.
- Trigger response. Particularly on platforms with the BLINC Bluetooth FCU — the trigger pull to BB leaving the barrel is faster than any AEG gearbox.
- ROF control. Set your rate of fire to exactly what you want — 15 RPS for a milsim loadout, 35 RPS for speedsoft. Adjustable on the fly via the Wolverine app on BLINC-equipped platforms.
- Durability. A Wolverine INFERNO Gen2 or XTS engine has far fewer moving parts than an AEG gearbox. Less to break, less maintenance.
- Weather independence. Doesn't care whether it's a cold January morning or a hot August afternoon. The air pressure is set, the output is consistent.
The honest downsides of HPA:
- Setup cost. A complete HPA rifle plus tank, regulator, and line is a bigger upfront investment than an equivalent AEG. Budget around £750–£1,100 for a complete ready-to-play HPA setup.
- You need a fill station. Most UK airsoft sites have them. Check before you travel to a new site.
- The airline. You're running a line from the gun back to a tank. Most players run a compact 48ci tank in a dump pouch or use a WRAITH X integrated tank stock (like on the MTW Billet Unleashed) which eliminates the external line entirely.
- Learning curve. There's more to learn than with an AEG. PSI settings, dwell, hop rubber selection for your BB weight. Not difficult, but it's not quite plug-and-play either.
Who HPA is right for:
- Players who've been playing regularly for a year or more and want a meaningful performance step up
- Speedsoft and CQB players who prioritise trigger response and ROF
- Milsim players who need reliable, consistent performance across a full day of play in variable weather
- Anyone who's spent significant money upgrading AEGs and wants a platform that performs at that level out of the box

GBB — Gas Blowback
GBB uses compressed gas (green gas or CO2) to fire the BB and simultaneously cycle the bolt or slide, creating a recoil effect. For rifles it means a bolt that moves. For pistols it means a slide that racks. It's the most realistic-feeling of the three systems by a significant margin.
Who GBB is right for:
- Players who prioritise realism and physical feedback above raw consistency
- Training simulation players who want the closest thing to the feel of a real firearm
- Pistol players — GBB pistols like the Tokyo Marui Hi-Capas are the dominant choice for sidearms at most UK sites
- Milsim players who want authentic magazine handling (limited round counts, gas management)
Where GBB falls short:
- Cold weather. Green gas performance drops significantly below about 10°C. CO2 handles cold better but still isn't as consistent as HPA.
- Running costs. Buying gas regularly adds up. A GBB rifle in sustained full-auto consumes gas quickly.
- FPS consistency. Gas pressure varies with temperature and as the magazine empties. You'll see more FPS spread than HPA.
- Magazine cost. GBB magazines are significantly more expensive than AEG or HPA mags. A full loadout of GBB rifle mags is a serious investment.
It's also worth noting that GBB and HPA aren't mutually exclusive. A popular setup at Skirmish Wycombe Airsoft is an HPA rifle as your primary with a GBB pistol sidearm — you get the consistency of HPA where it matters most and the realism of GBB for a sidearm where gas performance variation is less critical.
