Face Protection

Eye protection is mandatory at every UK airsoft site. Face protection isn't — but the players who skip it generally only do so until their first decent hit on the mouth. A 0.20g BB at 350 FPS impacting an unprotected tooth doesn't always crack enamel, but it always hurts enough to spoil a game day, and occasionally hurts enough to require a dentist visit. Lower face protection is the cheapest insurance in the sport.

Three main face protection styles cover most players. Mesh lower-face masks are the most popular — vented metal mesh that covers nose to chin, allows full breathing and clear voice transmission, fogs less than solid plastic, can take direct hits without splintering. The default for most outdoor skirmish. Half-face hard plastic masks are the speedsoft choice — closer to the face, lower profile, less interference with cheek weld on rifles, but warmer and harder to communicate through. Full-face protection combines goggles and lower mask in a single unit — heavier and warmer but offers complete coverage for indoor CQB where short-range hits are common.

Compatibility considerations. Match the face mask to your eye protection — full-seal goggles fog less when paired with vented mesh masks than with solid plastic ones, because the mask doesn't trap exhaled breath against the lens. Match the cheek profile to your rifle — bulky masks can interfere with cheek weld, especially on M4-pattern rifles with high optic mounts.
