How to Convert Your M4 AEG to HPA UK

How to Convert Your M4 AEG to HPA — UK Guide

Converting an M4 AEG to HPA is one of the best upgrades in airsoft. You keep the rifle you know, and you add the consistent FPS, adjustable ROF, and binary fire capability that only an HPA system delivers. This guide covers everything: what you need, what the installation involves, and how to get your converted AEG running at its best on UK sites.

This guide covers Wolverine INFERNO Gen2 conversions for standard V2 M4 gearboxes — the most common AEG platform in UK airsoft.

What you need for an M4 HPA conversion

A complete M4 HPA conversion requires four things:

  • 1. Wolverine INFERNO Gen2 engine kit — the drop-in pneumatic engine that replaces your gearbox internals. Choose Standard (basic fire mode programming) or Spartan Edition (5 fire modes including binary). We stock both at Titan Forge Airsoft
  • 2. HPA tank — your air supply. A 48ci aluminium tank gets you started affordably; the HK Army Alpha 77ci is the all-day field choice
  • 3. HPA regulator — steps tank pressure down to engine operating range. Wolverine Storm Category 5 or HK Army Hostile XLP both work well
  • 4. HPA line — connects regulator to rifle. Amped Standard Weave 36" for most setups

Total cost for components: approximately £250–330 on top of your existing rifle.

Is my AEG compatible with the INFERNO Gen2?

The INFERNO Gen2 M4 edition is designed for standard V2 gearboxes — the gearbox used in the vast majority of M4/AR-15 platform AEGs. This includes rifles from G&G, KRYTAC, Tokyo Marui, Specna Arms, Cyma, VFC, Ares, and most other M4 manufacturers.

Compatibility considerations:

  • Hop-up compatibility: The INFERNO Gen2 uses a proprietary nozzle. Most standard hop-up units work fine, but some non-standard hop designs (e.g. certain Tokyo Marui enhanced hop-ups) may require adjustment. Contact us if you’re unsure
  • Gearbox version: Confirm your AEG uses a V2 gearbox before ordering the M4 version. AK-style AEGs use V3 gearboxes and require the V3 INFERNO variant (contact us for stock)
  • Cylinder length: The INFERNO Gen2 kit includes the cylinder for your specific platform. Make sure you select the correct variant for your barrel length

Not sure? Contact us with your rifle make and model — we’ll confirm compatibility before you order.

What does the installation involve?

Installing the INFERNO Gen2 requires:

  • Removing your AEG’s gearbox from the lower receiver
  • Opening the gearbox and removing the spring, piston, cylinder, and tappet plate
  • Installing the INFERNO engine, cylinder, and solenoid in their place
  • Routing the HPA line from the engine to the outside of the rifle
  • Connecting to tank, regulator, and line
  • Setting initial PSI and chronographing to your site’s limit

This is within the capability of an experienced airsoft tech but is not a beginner installation. Wolverine provides detailed installation guides and video support. If you’d prefer a professional installation, our tech team at Skirmish Wycombe Airsoft can handle it — contact us to book.

Setting up your converted AEG

Once installed and connected to your tank and regulator:

  • Start at 80 PSI and chrono. Adjust in 5 PSI increments to reach your target FPS/joule for your site
  • Programme your fire modes via trigger sequences (Spartan board) or via the Wolverine app if you’ve fitted a BLINC FCU
  • Run 0.25g BBs as your baseline. The INFERNO’s consistency means you can use heavier BBs (0.28g–0.32g) for better outdoor range without losing meaningful accuracy
  • Chrono before every game day — even if nothing has changed. PSI can drift slightly after temperature changes or if you’ve emptied and refilled the tank

Upgrading your converted AEG over time

One of the advantages of the INFERNO platform is a clear upgrade path:

  • Add BLINC Bluetooth FCU — replaces the Spartan board for wireless fire mode programming, live chrono display, and Auto-Tune
  • Upgrade to INFERNO XTS — the XTS upgrade kit replaces the Gen2 engine internals with the extended stroke design for tighter groupings
  • Add QUAKE recoil — the QUAKE + XTS kit adds HPA-driven mechanical recoil to your build
