The contact yoke is how electricity gets from the battery in the grip into the engine, and it does that through sprung contacts rather than a plug. That design is why an MTW grip comes off so easily, and it is also why the yoke is a wear part — the contacts get dirty, get bent, or lose their spring.
The failure is undramatic and easy to misread. The rifle works, then works intermittently, then works if you hold the grip a certain way, then stops. Plenty of people have replaced a board before working out it was seven pounds of yoke all along.
It is a five-minute job with the grip off and worth doing before the season rather than during it.
