How Far Do Airsoft Guns Shoot? Effective vs Max Range

"How far does it shoot?" is one of the first questions every new player asks — and the honest answer is more useful than the big number on the box. Here's what airsoft guns really do at range, and how to get more out of yours.

Effective range vs maximum range

There are two numbers, and only one of them matters in a game. Maximum range is how far a BB physically travels before it drops — often impressive on paper, but by that point it's wandering off line and doing nothing useful. Effective range is how far the gun puts a BB where you're aiming, consistently enough to hit a person. That's the number to care about.

As a rough guide, most airsoft guns have an effective range somewhere around 35–55m, and even well-set-up rifles rarely stay reliably on target much past 60–90m before gravity and wind take over. A pistol will be shorter; a tuned sniper rifle a bit longer. But the ceiling is lower than newcomers expect, because a light 6mm plastic BB simply can't fight physics forever.

Why FPS isn't the whole story

It's tempting to think more FPS equals more range, and up to a point it helps — but past your site's limit you can't legally go higher anyway, and raw speed without a stable BB just means you miss faster. Beyond a certain point, adding power doesn't extend effective range at all; the limiting factor becomes the BB itself and how well the gun spins it. This is exactly why two guns shooting the same FPS can have wildly different range. If you want the detail on how power is measured and capped, our joules and site limits guide covers it.

What actually decides your range

  • Hop-up. The single biggest factor. Hop puts backspin on the BB so it flies flat instead of dropping — a well-tuned hop is what turns FPS into distance. Our hop rubber guide explains how to match it to your setup.
  • BB weight and quality. Heavier BBs hold their line and shrug off wind; cheap, out-of-round BBs curve unpredictably no matter how good the gun is. Our BB guide covers what to run.
  • The weather. A headwind kills range, cold saps gas guns, and rain shortens everyone's effective distance. Some days the gun just won't reach as far — that's normal.
  • The barrel and internals. A quality, consistent inner barrel and good air seal squeeze the most out of what you've got.

How to get more distance

You don't need a more powerful gun — you need a better-behaved one. Start with the cheap wins: good precision BBs in the right weight, and a properly set hop-up. From there, a better hop rubber and a quality inner barrel make the biggest difference to consistency. We go deeper into the whole process in our accuracy guide.

The takeaway: don't chase the number on the box. A stock gun with the right BBs and a dialled hop will out-shoot an expensive one running cheap ammo every single time.
