Hop rubber selection gets either over-complicated or completely ignored. Most players run whatever came in the gun, never touch it again, and wonder why their BBs curve off at 40 metres. It's one of the cheapest and most effective things you can change — here's what the numbers mean and how to pick, including specific notes for HPA players on the Wolverine MTW and Heretic Labs Article Series.
What the degree number actually measures
It's a hardness rating, measured the same way rubber hardness is measured in any other industry. The scale you'll see in airsoft runs roughly from 50 to 90. A lower number is a softer rubber. A higher number is firmer. That's the whole of it — the number tells you nothing about the brand's quality, the design of the contact patch, or how well it will suit your gun.
What hardness changes is how the rubber behaves under pressure. A soft rubber deforms readily, so it grips the BB and applies hop easily even when there isn't much air behind it. A firm rubber resists deforming, so it holds its shape when a lot of pressure hits it and gives you the same contact shot after shot.
Matching the degree to your gun
The question isn't "which is best" — it's "how hard is my gun pushing?" Think of it as matching the rubber to the pressure.

Two things follow from that table. First, a rubber that's too firm for your gun will feel like the hop "doesn't do anything" — you'll wind the adjuster right in and still get a flat, dropping shot. Second, a rubber that's too soft for your gun will over-hop easily, be twitchy to adjust, and wear out faster.
BB weight matters as much as the degree
The rubber and the BB are one system. A heavier BB needs more backspin to hold its line, and it takes more grip to impart that spin — so heavier ammo generally pairs with a softer rubber at the same energy level, and lighter ammo with a firmer one. If you change BB weight and your grouping falls apart, the hop rubber is a likely culprit before anything else.

Hop rubber selection for HPA platforms
HPA players — particularly those running the Wolverine MTW or Heretic Labs Article Series — should approach hop rubber selection slightly differently to AEG players. Because HPA delivers perfectly consistent air pressure on every shot, the hop rubber becomes one of the biggest variables in your accuracy. A worn or poorly matched bucking will show up more obviously on an HPA platform precisely because everything else is so consistent.
The MTW and Article Series both use MTW-spec hop-up bodies which are compatible with standard AEG hop rubbers. Wolverine's own documentation names their recommended part directly: "We recommend the 70 degree Maple Leaf Macaron Bucking." For most UK field play setups running 0.28g–0.32g BBs at 1–1.14J, a 70° Maple Leaf is a solid starting point. For players running heavier BBs (0.36g+) at higher joule limits, going softer (60–65°) can improve the hop engagement at lower FPS.
If your MTW or Article Series is shooting flat with no hop or struggling to hold hop adjustment, the hop rubber is the first thing to check — they do wear, and a fresh bucking is a cheap fix before you start investigating anything else. Fitting and living with it
Hop rubbers are consumables. They harden, tear at the contact patch and lose grip over a season or two of regular play, and the symptoms creep up slowly enough that most players blame the BBs. Check yours when you next strip the gun — if the lip looks glazed, flattened or split, replace it.
Two practical notes: never clean a hop rubber with solvent or petroleum-based oil, which attacks the rubber — silicone only, and sparingly. And expect to re-zero your hop after fitting a new one; the adjustment point will not be where it was.
