Why hop matters more on HPA than on an AEG
An AEG has mechanical variation baked in — spring, piston, air seal, battery voltage all drift shot to shot. That variation masks a mediocre hop setup, because everything is a bit inconsistent anyway.
HPA removes that. Every shot leaves at the same regulated pressure. So the hop unit becomes the largest remaining variable in your accuracy, and any fault in it shows up plainly instead of being lost in the noise. That's why HPA players notice a tired bucking long before AEG players do, and it's why an HPA rifle with a worn hop can group worse than a stock AEG.
The MTW hop adjuster
Wolverine's instruction is short: "The amount of hop-up can be adjust[ed] with the adjustment wheel accessible through the ejection port on the MTW's right side. Rotating the wheel clockwise will increase the amount of hop-up."
That's genuinely all they publish about adjusting it — no click counts, no starting position, no zeroing routine. (On the Gen-12 MTW shotgun they're slightly more explicit: "Use a 1/8" hex key to rotate the hop screw clockwise to increase the hop and counterclockwise to decrease the hop.")
The method below is standard airsoft practice rather than something Wolverine document, and we've flagged clearly which parts are theirs.
Setting hop, step by step
- Sort your pressure and dwell first. Hop set against an untuned engine will need redoing. See part two.
- Use the BBs you'll actually play with. Wolverine's own recommendation for the MTW is "BBs with a weight of 0.28g or higher", and they specify "precision 6mm BBs… Never use any used or damaged BBs." A different weight is a different trajectory, so hop set with 0.28g is not set for 0.36g.
- Wind the hop off completely, then fire a few shots and watch where they land. You want a baseline of no lift.
- Add hop a little at a time, firing several shots at each position — not one. One shot tells you nothing about consistency, which is the whole point of the exercise.
- Find flat, then stop. You're looking for the BB to fly level for as long as possible and then fall away. The moment shots start climbing at the end of their flight, you've gone past it — back it off.
- Shoot a group at your realistic engagement distance and check it holds. Consistency between shots matters more than the single furthest shot you can produce.
If BBs curve sideways rather than lifting, that's usually the bucking seating unevenly rather than the adjuster. Worth remembering Wolverine's safety note for a related reason: "Never shoot holding the Airsoft gun side-ways as the BB pellets will curve (this is due to the hop-up system)."
The bucking: what Wolverine specify
For the MTW hop, Wolverine name a specific part: "We recommend the 70 degree Maple Leaf Macaron Bucking." We stock the Maple Leaf Super Macaron, and it's what we fit as standard on the bench.
Two fitting details from their hop manual that cause real problems when missed:
- Alignment: "Fit the bucking onto the rear of the inner barrel, making sure the ridge on the inside of the bucking aligns with the groove in the inner barrel." A bucking rotated even slightly on the barrel will hop sideways.
- Lubrication: "While lubrication is not necessary when using the recommended bucking, some thicker buckings may require it" — and if you do, "Only apply a small amount to the outside of the bucking, being careful not to get lubricant inside or on the lip." Lubricant on the contact lip is a guaranteed way to lose your hop.
The nub goes "into the hop up arm as shown" with the arm closed to hold it in place, and the hop wheel fits onto the front O-ring with "the hop up arm fit[ting] into the channel in the back of the wheel."
The bit almost nobody checks: the nozzle
This is the most useful thing in this article, and it's buried in Wolverine's troubleshooting table.
Their engine installs so that "the nozzle fits into the MTW Hop" — the nozzle has to seal against the back of the bucking on every shot. If it doesn't, air escapes before it does any work. Wolverine list the consequences directly:

Read those together and the pattern is clear: a nozzle that doesn't seal properly at the bucking shows up as poor accuracy AND poor air efficiency at the same time. If you're getting both at once, stop adjusting the hop wheel and look at the nozzle.
Wolverine publish a sizing method for nozzles too — measure the two distances shown in their guide, add them together, "then choose a nozzle from the list that is 0 to 0.5mm longer than your measurement." That half-millimetre tolerance is how tight this actually is.
Diagnosing an inconsistent hop
Wolverine have a knowledge base entry called "Troubleshooting Inconsistent Hop-Up", but it's a video with no written article — there's no published list of causes and fixes to quote. So here's the order we work through it on the bench, with the documented items marked.
- Is it actually the hop? Check velocity consistency on a chrono first. Wandering FPS means an engine or seal problem, not a hop problem (Wolverine-documented: inconsistent velocity → dwell too low, O-rings, nozzle seal).
- The bucking. Glazed, flattened or split contact lip, or seated crooked on the barrel. Consumable — replace it rather than nursing it.
- The nozzle seal, as above (Wolverine-documented).
- The BBs. Out-of-round or undersized BBs produce exactly the symptoms of a bad hop. See our BB guide.
- Rate of fire. Wolverine warn that "Setting a high Rate of Fire may result in misfeeding depending on other factors including the magazine, hop, and dwell setting" (Wolverine-documented). Feeding problems read as hop problems.
- The chamber. A worn or flexing hop unit won't hold a setting. A machined replacement — the Wolverine CNC hop-up chamber for MTW or the Maxx M4W — fixes it permanently. The Maxx advanced feed tube is worth a look at the same time.
Wolverine's own air-efficiency article lists "hop seal integrity" among the reasons a gun underperforms its published shot count — more evidence that on HPA, hop and air are the same conversation.
The short version
Tune pressure and dwell, fit a good bucking seated square, check the nozzle actually seals, then set hop with the BBs you'll play with — flat and no further. Re-check it when you change BB weight, and treat the bucking as a consumable rather than a fit-and-forget part.
