Part four of our MTW owner's series — the maintenance one. Part one is the MTW setup guide, part two is PSI, dwell and rate of fire, part three is hop-up tuning.
Service intervals — counted in rounds, not months
Wolverine state the same interval for both engines: "Regular maintenance on the INFERNO XTS HPA engine should be performed every 25-50k rounds depending on the conditions it is being used in." For the Gen 2 the wording is identical, with the useful addition: "The dustier and dirtier the conditions, the more frequently it should be serviced."
Regulators are on a different clock. Both the STORM Category 5 and the WRAITH X give a "Recommended Service Time: 100,000 shots or every 6 months." That six-month figure is the one people miss — a regulator sitting unused still ages.

Reading the INFERNO XTS leak chart
If your engine leaks, where it leaks narrows it down to specific O-rings. Wolverine's XTS chart maps it like this:

Note the distinction between around the nozzle and out of the nozzle — different seals entirely, and the second one might not be a seal at all but dirt in the solenoid. For the Gen 2 the equivalent chart is published as an image only; the one worked example Wolverine give in text is "if your engine is leaking from around the nozzle, you should check the location and condition of O-ring #4."
Their blunt diagnostic for a leak you can't place: "check for audible signs of leak point." Pressurise it, hold it to your ear in a quiet room, and follow the hiss.
The troubleshooting table, translated
Wolverine's INFERNO Gen 2 manual has a table most owners never open. Worth knowing by heart:

Selector switch won't hold its position
A very common one, and cheap to fix. Wolverine: "the selector switch is held into each mode position by a spring and detent located in the lower receiver which will wear over time", and "The spring and detent can be replaced by removing the pistol grip." Gun won't switch between semi and auto
The MTW reads the selector optically: "This sensor works by detecting a dark or light surface on the selector barrel. Detecting a light surface will set the MTW to semi-auto and detecting a dark surface will set the MTW to full-auto." If it's misreading, Wolverine's fixes are to clean the contacts "with 70% or better isopropyl alcohol", and that "A sticker or paint can be used to ensure that the two surfaces are detected correctly by the sensor."
If the trigger board itself has failed, there's a replacement trigger board.
Air efficiency: what actually costs you shots
Wolverine list six factors affecting air efficiency: dwell tuning, barrel length, rate of fire, tank charge, moisture or air contaminants, and temperature.
When a gun underperforms its published shot count, they name the causes in order — improper dwell tuning is "Most common cause", then tank cleanliness, hop seal integrity, worn components and environment. Their summary: "Expect lower performance when using a longer barrel, firing a higher ROF, or in cold conditions."
So if you're getting fewer shots per fill than you expect, the first thing to check is your dwell — not your seals. See part two for the procedure.
It's also worth knowing how Wolverine generate their published figures, because it explains why yours differ. Their test uses a 13ci tank filled to 3,000 PSI and "allowed to cool to ambient temperature after filling", a precisely tuned dwell, a 285mm (10") inner barrel, and counts shots from 2,500 PSI down to 1,000 PSI at one shot per second. Their published range is "intended to represent where the majority of systems will perform when set up properly" and explicitly "will not cover 100% of cases." A 14" barrel in a British January is not that test.
Lubrication: what Wolverine specify
Across the INFERNO, XTS, QUAKE, STORM Cat 5 and WRAITH X manuals the instruction is consistent: use an O-ring safe lubricant — they name TechT Gun Sav as their example, and elsewhere describe it as "a silicone-based lubricant." Application is "a small amount of lubricant around the circumference of each O-ring", not a generous smear.
Interestingly, Wolverine never name a banned product. The requirement is stated positively — O-ring safe, silicone-based — so the practical rule is the same one that applies everywhere in airsoft: silicone on rubber, nothing petroleum-based. We stock silicone lubricants and greases that meet that description.
Three specific instructions worth following:
- Tank threads: "Lightly coat the threads on the tank with a silicone-based lubricant and thread the regulator onto the top."
- Regulator vent hole: "give a brief spray of silicone based lubricant into the vent hole every few uses or before extended storage."
- Storage: "remove the air supply from the regulator and depressurize the regulator", and store it dry — "to avoid corrosion to parts."
A reg multi-tool and a magnetic tech mat make all of this much less painful — these engines contain O-rings down to 1mm x 10.5mm, and Wolverine specifically flag not losing the poppet O-ring during service.
Safety — the non-negotiable bits
- "High pressure air systems contain air compressed under great pressure and should always be treated with care to avoid serious injury or death."
- "Never leave HPA tanks in direct sunlight (including during play), in parked cars, or otherwise submit them to excessive heat" — heat raises tank pressure to unsafe levels.
- Before any disassembly: remove the magazine, disconnect the battery, disconnect the air. On a WRAITH X or QUAKE, remove the tank and "fire two shots to vent pressure."
- Never store the MTW with the battery connected — it can damage the FCU.
- "Do not disassemble gun yourself. Always contact your local retailer."
That last one is Wolverine's position, not ours — plenty of owners service their own engines perfectly well. But it's worth knowing where the line is, especially while a gun is in warranty.
