Steel is a sensible material for a mass-production barrel nut. It's cheap to machine, strong enough for the application, and consistent to manufacture at scale. It is not the right material when weight reduction is the goal. The OG Carbon Gen2 Barrel Nut replaces the steel original with CNC machined 7075 aerospace aluminium — a grade selected for its tensile strength relative to density. 7075 aluminium is approximately one-third the density of steel while retaining mechanical properties appropriate for a load-bearing structural connection point.
The 34g figure is the end result of that material choice. To put it in context: weight at the front of a rifle has a disproportionate effect on perceived muzzle-heaviness because of the lever arm from the support hand to the muzzle. A small weight saving at the barrel nut — which sits near the balance point — matters less than the same saving further forward, but it contributes to a cumulative weight reduction when combined with a carbon outer barrel and carbon buffer tube across the same build.
Gen2 indicates OG Carbon's revised design — the second iteration of their MTW barrel nut, incorporating refinements from the original. If you're replacing a worn original or fitting an aftermarket handguard that requires a fresh barrel nut, the Gen2 is the current OG Carbon offering. Compatible with all MTW Billet and Forged variants without modification.
