What is the L403A1?
The L403A1 is the British military designation for the Knight’s Armament KS-1, a 5.56×45mm NATO rifle built on the AR-15 platform as a development of Knight’s long-running SR-16. It was selected in September 2023 under Project Hunter as the British forces’ new Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW).
Importantly, it is not a wholesale replacement for the SA80 across the entire army. The L403A1 is being issued to close-combat and specialist units — the Royal Marines, the Army’s Ranger Regiment and the Army Special Operations Brigade — taking over from the L85A2/A3 and L119A1/A2 in those roles.

They all refer to the same rifle. KS-1 is Knight’s Armament’s own model name, L403A1 is the British service designation it was given on adoption, and AIW (Alternative Individual Weapon) is the programme role it fills. If you see any of the three in a listing or an article, it is this rifle.

Running one
As a GBBR it runs on green gas with no battery. Gas output drops in cold weather, so keep spare magazines warm in winter.
