Open top, elastic over the top, MOLLE on the outside. An open top double M4 pouch in black. Elastic loops pull over the magazines to hold them, MOLLE straps mount it to a rig, and MOLLE loops on the face let you stack something else on top.

Open top pouches are what people end up using. There is no lid to clear and nothing to shut afterwards, so a reload is reach, pull, go, and the magazine is in the gun while someone with a flap is still finding the buckle. The trade is that retention is down to friction and elastic rather than a cover.

Which is why the elastic loops matter here. They pull over the top of each magazine and hold it down into the body of the pouch, so it takes a deliberate upward pull to free one. It is not the same as a closed lid for going prone in a ditch, and it is a long way better than a bare open pouch.

The MOLLE loops on the front are the quietly useful part. A double pouch takes up a good stretch of rig real estate, and being able to hang a small utility or pistol pouch off the face of it means you are not choosing between them.

Good to know before you buy

The elastic is retention, not a lid. It will hold a magazine through running and climbing. It is not the pouch to choose if you spend the game crawling, and a flap lid version exists for that — the closed pouches are in our ammo pouches section.

Use the front MOLLE. Two rows of loops on the face of the pouch will carry a single pistol pouch, a small utility or a dump pouch tab, which is free rig space most people never notice they have.

Black is the indoor choice. For CQB it is the right call and nobody is spotting your pouch under strip lights. In daylight woodland a dark rectangle is the most visible thing on a rig, so a green or coyote pouch earns its place outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Will my magazines fall out?
The elastic loops pull over the top of each magazine and hold it into the body, so not in normal use. An open top pouch is still an open top pouch if you go upside down.

What does it mount to?
MOLLE straps, so any rig, belt or plate carrier with MOLLE webbing. Weave the straps through both the pouch and the rig rather than just looping them once.

Can I put a hi-cap in it?
It is sized for two M4 or M16 style magazines and takes the usual mid-caps and hi-caps. A very long drum or box magazine is a different problem.

Is it suitable for AK magazines?
Nuprol specify it for M4 and M16 style magazines. An AK magazine is a different shape and a different curve, so use a pouch built for it.

⚠ Weave the MOLLE straps properly, not just once. A strap passed through a single loop and clipped will work loose over a game day. Thread it through the rig and the pouch alternately all the way down, then snap it off.
