NiMH, on a Deans plug, in a folding crane pack. 8.4v and 1600mAh in Nuprol’s Crane DBL shape — two halves joined by a lead, so it folds into a stock rather than needing one straight run.

Nickel metal hydride has not gone away, and the reason is convenience rather than performance. There is no per-cell balancing, no storage voltage to manage, no fire-safe bag to remember and nothing that objects to being left flat in a kit bag for a month. For a club gun, a loaner, or anyone who does not want battery maintenance as a hobby, that is worth more than the extra punch of lithium.

8.4v is also what most AEGs were designed around. A stock gearbox with original contacts will simply last longer on it, and the rate of fire is what the manufacturer intended rather than what an 11.1v pack pushes it to.

The DBL shape is the practical part. Two halves on a joining lead will go round corners that a rigid stick cannot, which makes it one of the few options for stocks with an awkward compartment. It comes terminated in Deans as standard.

Good to know before you buy

It charges from a simple NiMH charger. No balancing, no cell taps. That said, a smart charger that terminates properly will make it last far longer than a timed wall plug — see our chargers.

Expect less punch than a LiPo, and fewer rules. At 8.4v the gun will cycle more slowly than on 11.1v. In exchange you can throw this in a bag and forget about it, which no lithium pack will tolerate.

Deans as standard is unusual on a NiMH pack. Most nickel packs ship on Tamiya, so if your gun has already been rewired this saves you an adapter. Check which plug you have before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I buy NiMH over LiPo?
Simplicity and tolerance. No balance charging, no storage voltage, no bag, and it survives neglect. On a rental or club gun that is handled by different people, it is the sensible chemistry.

Does it suffer from memory effect?
Modern NiMH is far less prone to it than old nickel cadmium, but running a pack properly flat occasionally and charging it fully does no harm. It does not need the careful partial-charge regime a LiPo wants.

What does DBL mean?
Double: two halves of the pack joined by a lead so it can fold. Nuprol list it under their Crane configuration, which is the shape most commonly fitted into a crane stock tube.

Will it fit a standard crane stock?
That is what the shape is designed for, but crane stocks vary. The dimensions are in the table at 18 x 36 x 118mm per half; measure, or tell us the gun and we will check.

⚠ Do not charge a NiMH pack on a LiPo setting. A charger set to lithium will push the wrong termination voltage into nickel cells and overheat them. If your charger does both chemistries, confirm the mode before you connect it.
💡 Titan Forge Airsoft tip: Give a NiMH pack a full charge the night before rather than weeks ahead. Nickel cells self-discharge noticeably faster than lithium, so a pack charged a fortnight ago is not the pack you think it is. Chargers are in our chargers section.
