The difference between an open and an enclosed dot shows up on a wet Sunday. An open emitter fires its LED across a gap at the lens, and anything that lands in that gap — rain, silt, a smear of BB lube — lands directly in the light path. The Defender-CCW closes the gap entirely: the emitter sits inside a 7075 aluminium shell with glass at both ends, so the thing that breaks a dot sight in British weather simply has nowhere to sit.
Reticle choice is the other half of it. One press cycles a bare 3 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle, or both together. The dot alone is what you want on a target the size of a playing card; the circle is what finds the window fast when the gun comes up from retention and your eyes have not caught up yet. Vortex quote 35,000 hours on the cell and 150,000 with the solar panel contributing, and the Auto D-TEC circuit decides which source to draw from by reading ambient light rather than asking you.
Deck height is 7.2mm and the whole optic measures 1.59in long, which is the point of the thing — it is meant to sit low enough on a slide that suppressor-height irons still co-witness. The front of the housing carries the knurled Fast-Rack texture, so the optic itself becomes the charging surface when you need to rack the slide one-handed against a belt or a boot.

Good to know
Will it fit my pistol? It needs a Shield RMSc slide cut, which is the same pattern used by a long list of micro-compact carry optics. Plenty of airsoft slides are cut for RMR rather than RMSc, and the two are not interchangeable without an adapter plate. Measure or check your slide before ordering — if you are unsure, send us the model and we will tell you.
Is a firearm optic overkill on an airsoft gun? Mechanically it is the opposite of a problem: this is built to survive live pistol recoil, so a green-gas blowback will never stress it. What you are buying is the sealed housing and the glass, both of which matter just as much on a skirmish day.
Does the solar panel replace the battery? No. The cell stays in and does the work in low light; the panel extends how long that cell lasts. There is no configuration where you run the optic with no battery fitted.
