Two pins hold the whole rifle together, and both of them are designed to be pushed out with a fingertip. That is exactly the property you want when servicing an engine in a field tent and exactly the property that loses them in the grass.
They also wear. A pin that has been pushed in and out a few hundred times develops enough slop that the upper and lower start to move against each other, and a rifle that rattles at the hinge feels considerably worse than it shoots.
Buying the pair is the sensible move. Replacing one worn pin next to one fresh one just moves the wobble to the other end.
