A red dot does one thing and does it better than anything else: it lets you shoot with both eyes open. You keep full peripheral vision, you see the player moving in from the left, and the dot goes where you look rather than requiring you to line up two sights and a target.
For CQB and fast-moving woodland play that is worth more than magnification. Iron sights force one eye closed and demand alignment; a red dot needs the dot on the target and nothing else.
It mounts to standard 20mm Picatinny rail and runs on a battery, so it is a fit-and-forget upgrade on essentially any rifle.

Good to know before you buy
Unmagnified, so it is a close-to-mid range sight. For identifying targets past forty metres you want magnification, or a magnifier behind the dot. Turn it off between games — a red dot left on will flatten its battery in a kit bag.
