Airsoft Battery Types Explained: LiPo vs NiMH (UK Guide)

Two battery types matter in airsoft: NiMH and LiPo. NiMH is the safe, forgiving default. LiPo gives you a faster trigger and a higher rate of fire, but your gun has to be able to take it and you have to charge it properly. Here's how to pick, and how not to ruin either.

Batteries are the least glamorous thing you'll buy and the one most likely to end your game day. A flat battery in the second game means you're borrowing a gun for the rest of the afternoon. A wrongly chosen one can cook a gearbox. We sell a lot of these across the counter at Skirmish Wycombe Airsoft, and the same questions come up every weekend — so here are the answers.

NiMH — the sensible starting point

Nickel-metal hydride is what most guns ship with, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's tolerant of imperfect charging, it doesn't need a balance lead, and if you leave it on a shelf for a month it isn't a hazard. The trade-off is bulk: an 8.4V NiMH pack holding the same charge as a LiPo takes up noticeably more room, which matters in a slim stock tube or a crane stock.

LiPo — more punch, more responsibility

Lithium polymer packs hold more energy in far less space and deliver it harder, which is why they improve trigger response and rate of fire so noticeably. A 7.4V LiPo is a straight quality-of-life upgrade for most guns. An 11.1V is a different matter — see the warning below.

Before you fit an 11.1V: the extra voltage puts real stress on the trigger contacts, piston and gears of a standard gearbox. If your gun doesn't have a MOSFET or an electronic trigger unit, an 11.1V will wear it out faster — sometimes a lot faster. Stick to 7.4V unless you know the gun is built for it, and ask us if you're not sure.

What the numbers on the label mean

Voltage (V) is how hard the battery drives the motor. Higher voltage means a faster motor, a quicker trigger and a higher rate of fire — and more strain on everything downstream of it.

mAh is capacity: how long the pack lasts before it needs charging. A 1600mAh pack holds roughly twice what an 800mAh one does. Nothing else about the gun's behaviour changes — it just runs for longer.

C rating (on LiPos — the "20C" or "30C") is how fast the pack can safely discharge. For airsoft, anything from 20C upward is plenty; there's no benefit to chasing a high number.

Shape and connector — the bit people get wrong

Voltage is only half the decision. The pack also has to physically fit, and the plug has to match. Stick, nunchuck, crane and PEQ-micro packs all exist because different guns have different spaces to fill — measure before you order, or bring the gun in and we'll match it.

On connectors, most stock guns use small Tamiya; upgraded guns usually run Deans (T-plug), which handles current better. You don't have to rewire to switch — a female Tamiya to male Deans adaptor or the reverse costs a couple of pounds. Full range in cables & connectors.

Charging — get this right and batteries last years

A LiPo must be charged on a balance charger, which brings each cell up evenly rather than treating the pack as one lump. Cells that drift apart are what causes swelling and, in the worst case, fires. This isn't an expensive problem to solve.

Two more things worth owning: a LiPo safety sack to charge inside, and an airsoft LiPo tester so you can check a pack's cell voltages in seconds instead of guessing. For transport and storage, a battery storage tube keeps packs from being crushed or shorted in a kit bag.

LiPo rules, short version: never charge unattended, never charge a pack that looks swollen or has been dropped hard, never run a LiPo completely flat, and don't leave one fully charged for weeks — store it around half charge (roughly 3.8V per cell) if it's going in a cupboard until the next game.

Running HPA? You still need a battery

HPA engines are electronically fired, so they take a small battery of their own — nothing like the pack an AEG needs. A Rebel HPA Micro 7.4V 300mAh is the usual fit, and a Tamiya / Deans / JST charging harness lets you charge it from a standard airsoft charger. So which one should you buy?

If the gun is stock and you're new: an 8.4V NiMH in whatever shape fits, plus a smart charger. If the gun has a MOSFET or ETU and you want a sharper trigger: a 7.4V LiPo, a balance charger and a safety sack. Only go to 11.1V if you know the internals are up to it. Buy the highest mAh that physically fits — capacity is the one number with no downside.
