Wolverine MTW Range Compared

The MTW (Modular Training Weapon) is Wolverine's HPA M4 platform. In place of a gearbox it runs an electropneumatic INFERNO engine fed by high-pressure air, which gives near-instant trigger response, excellent shot-to-shot consistency and simple tuning. It keeps a realistic M4 layout, feeds from standard M4/STANAG AEG magazines, and is built so the engine drops out for maintenance in minutes. Every MTW shares that core — what changes between models is the receiver, the engine tune, the electronics, whether it has recoil, and the format.

Billet vs Forged — the two receiver families

This is the first fork in the range, and it's about how the receiver is made rather than how the rifle shoots.

If you're buying your first MTW to skirmish with, Billet is almost always the right call — it shoots identically to a Forged rifle for a good deal less. Forged earns its premium if authenticity matters to you or you run a milsim impression. Browse both in our Billet and Forged ranges.

The engine: INFERNO vs INFERNO XTS

Every MTW runs an INFERNO engine. The standard INFERNO is excellent and needs nothing added for most players. The INFERNO XTS is the upgraded tune, and it's what the "X" in a model name refers to.

• Standard INFERNO — proven, consistent, quiet and fully tunable. Fitted to the bulk of the range.
• INFERNO XTS — an extended-stroke design with a stainless nozzle and Delrin baffle for tighter shot groupings and more forgiving dwell tuning. Crucially, it adds a recoil port — which is what makes the QUAKE recoil stock possible. The XTS is the foundation every recoil (R) and Bluetooth (B) trim is built on.

QUAKE recoil — the "R"

The newest addition to the MTW range is real recoil. The QUAKE MTW is an HPA-driven recoil stock that uses the weapon's own mass to deliver a genuine kick to the shoulder — no added weights, no motor. It's the feature the "R" in a model name refers to, and it only works with the INFERNO XTS engine, because it draws its air from the XTS recoil port.

That shared air supply has a practical consequence worth understanding before you buy. A recoil build splits its air between firing and actuating the stock, so it runs at a higher input pressure, uses more air per magazine, and trades a little shot-to-shot consistency for the feedback. If air efficiency and the tightest possible consistency matter more to you than kick, a non-recoil trim is the better pick. If immersion is the point, QUAKE delivers it.

You don't have to buy a recoil rifle to get recoil. Existing owners can add it with the QUAKE MTW + INFERNO XTS Recoil Upgrade Kit, which pairs the recoil stock with the XTS engine and is backwards compatible with Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 MTWs.

The electronics: Spartan vs BLINC

The fire-control unit (FCU) sets your rate of fire, dwell, fire modes and burst. There are two, and the choice comes down to whether you want a phone in the loop.

You can also fit a Spartan control board or a BLINC Bluetooth FCU separately, so the FCU isn't a permanent decision — but it's worth choosing deliberately up front.

Decoding the names: X, B, R and the trims

Wolverine encode the features into the model name with three letters. Learn these three and you can read any MTW at a glance.

Because BLINC and QUAKE both rely on the XTS engine, B and R only ever appear alongside X. The letters combine like this:

• Gen3 — the current generation of the Billet receiver and internals.
• Standard vs Tactical — furniture level. Standard is the leaner, keener-priced build; Tactical adds a fuller handguard, a DLG grip and stock, and a more equipped look.
• Unleashed — a complete lineless setup in the box: a WRAITH X stock with a built-in STORM Category 5 regulator and a 13ci tank, so there's no external line or separate tank to buy. The easiest way to get a fully running HPA rifle in one purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Do all MTWs use the same magazines?
The M4 models feed from standard M4/STANAG AEG magazines. The MTW-9 uses ASG EVO magazines, the AK-105 uses AK-format AEG magazines, and the MTW-308 uses SR-25-pattern magazines.

Is Billet or Forged better?
Neither shoots better — they share the same engine and internals. Billet is the value choice; Forged is for authenticity and milsim. Most skirmishers are happiest on Billet.

What is the difference between INFERNO and INFERNO XTS?
The XTS is an extended-stroke tune with a stainless nozzle and a recoil port, for tighter groupings and QUAKE compatibility. The standard INFERNO is excellent for most players.

What is the difference between XR and XBR?
Both have the XTS engine and QUAKE recoil. XR keeps the on-gun Spartan FCU; XBR adds the BLINC Bluetooth FCU on top, so you also get wireless app tuning.

Can I add recoil to an MTW I already own?
Yes. The QUAKE MTW + INFERNO XTS Recoil Upgrade Kit is backwards compatible with Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 MTWs — you'll be running the XTS engine and the QUAKE stock afterwards.

Do I need the BLINC Bluetooth FCU?
Only if you like tuning from an app or move between sites with different RPS limits. The Spartan FCU does everything on the gun with no phone required.

What do I need to actually run an MTW?
An HPA tank, a regulator and a line — unless you buy an Unleashed model, which includes a lineless tank-stock setup in the box.
